Hens, especially adult ones, are often affected by various kind of ticks. They parasitize under the corneal layer of the unfledged part of legs and not so often in feathers. The bird feels itch in affected places and often pecks them which leads to the formation of keratinized overgrown bumps and complications in the form of necrosis of fingers. Hens become lame and lose productivity.
Knemidocoptes (Cnemidocoptes) (this is the name of this disease) declares itself clinically in spring and in summer. The diagnosis is confirmed by the microscopical analysis of the scales taken from affected legs and by finding the ticks.
For treating the birds you can use one of acaricides (0,01% solution of Ectomin, 0,2% solution of Bromocyclen (Alugan), 0,4% solution of dichlorvos), and also Butox in the form of the 0,0025% solution.
Holding the hen by its legs, body and head, dip it slowly into the solution for 1 or 2 minutes. 7 days later the treatment should be repeated. After that this hen is transferred to another place and the premises is treated with acaricides.
The prophylaxis of Knemidocoptes is a careful examination of the poultry that is older than 6 months. If you find out that more than 10% of hens are ill, it is expedient to replace ill hens by healthy ones.
