Don't torment birds
To stop hens' clucking, some poultry farmers throw cold water on them or dip them into a barrel. You should not do this because you can scare a bird and prolong the delay in oviposition. It is not good to put a bird into a wet cold dark cellar for several days. It can catch a cold there. Don't starve the brood hen: poor feeding leads to the weakening of the organism and the bird does not lay eggs for a long time.
Clucking hens should be kept separately. For this they are put into a separate cage. They should be separated after the first signs of clucking appear, it will allow you to reduce the pause in oviposition substantially. The cage of a very simple design can be made of the materials available at hand. Its dimensions are: the height of the rear wall is 50 cm, the height of the front wall is 70 cm, the width is 70 cm, the length is 140 cm.
The side walls can be made of old wood boards, plywood, off-cuts of wood-fibre board. The roof is made of old sheets of roofing iron, slate, ruberoid. The floor of the cage is made of wood planks spaced with the gap of 1.5…2 cm or of metal lath with big cells. The front door which is at the same time used as an entrance door is also desirable to be made of metal lath or of rods with the diameter of 5…6 mm.
The separation cage is located in a light place of the poultry-house or under a shed. Layers are separated for 2…4 days. In such not difficult separation birds begin to sing which is the sign of ceasing to cluck. 2…3 days after their release from the cage they begin laying eggs again.
